Microsoft releases UpdateAdvisor for future Windows Phone updates

As we reported last week, it is becoming apparent that devices with less than 8GB of internal storage will not be able to upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile. This leaves some Windows Phone owners out of luck and not able to get the latest OS when it begins launching sometime later this year. This news probably indicates that the amount of space required for the official update will make for a tight fit on phones with smaller internal drives, especially if they are already full of games, photos, videos and more. But to help ease the process for those who will be able to upgrade, Microsoft has released UpdateAdvisor for Windows Phone.

While not explicitly stated in the Windows Phone Store as being related to the Windows 10 Mobile upgrade, there are no announced Windows Phone 8 upgrades planned past the current GDR2. Therefore, it’s only natural to assume this new app is to help you get ready for the process of switching to Windows 10 Mobile when the update is pushed over the air.

The Windows Phone Store’s describes the app saying:

“It connects to the network to check

for new updates, then helps you free up space for updates by recommending files that you can move to an SD card or OneDrive to make room for the update. After the update is completed, you can move the files back to your phone.”

Right now when you open the app it requests access to check what space you have on your SD card (if you have installed one) and your OneDrive storage. Once it knows what space you have to work with, it then can clean up temporary data and see if there are any updates to install. Currently that is as far as the app goes in its process since there are no new updates to install, yet.

But the stated intention of the app is to help you move media and files off of your internal storage and place it on your SD card or OneDrive. With these options you can free up space for the substantial update to Windows 10 Mobile once it is available and ready to be installed.
