How can I invest in gold?

Most gold investments fall into three categories. 1. Physical gold in your custody. This usually will take the form of gold coins, such as the one ounce South African Krugerrand or the one ounce American Gold Eagle. You can buy the Gold Eagle directly from the US Mint, but at a substantially higher price than offered through gold coin dealers, so I would not recommend buying directly from the Mint. That said, be sure you are buying from a reputable dealer, either in person or through the Internet. There have been instances of counterfeit gold coins.

How Sustainable AgroEnergy’s “green oil” investment in Cambodia fell apart

This is a story involving a company called Sustainable AgroEnergy, a jatropha plantation in Cambodia, boiler room companies, retail investors asking where their money went, banks in Switzerland, Tanzania and the British Virgin Islands, a member of the House of Lords, and the Serious Fraud Office. First a quick recap of last week’s post about Global Forestry Investments, because it was a footnote to that post that led me to Sustainable AgroEnergy. Andrew Skeene and Omari Bowers of GFI bought teak plantations in Brazil. Emerald Knight sold plots of land in the plantations to retail investors.

SA’s first Shariah-compliant ETF

11 March 2009Absa Capital has launched South Africa’s first Shariah-compliant equity-linked exchange traded fund (ETF). The initial public offering for the NewFunds Shariah Top 40 Index ETF opened on 23 February, while the ETF will be listed on the JSE on 6 April. “The Shariah Top 40 Index ETF is a first for South Africa and will redefine the Muslim investment landscape in South Africa,” Absa Capital’s Vladimir Nedeljkovic said in a statement last month. “The ETF is a cost-efficient, transparent and easy-to-access investment product that conforms to the principles of Shariah law.
