Does Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) work?
As part of a series looking at technical/momentum indicators, today we're going to look at MACD. Developed by Gerald Appel (publisher of Systems and Forecasts) in the late seventies, the rather grand-sounding "Moving Average Convergence-Divergence (MACD) indicator" is actually one of the most commonly used momentum indicators around. It is used to spot changes in the strength, direction, momentum, and duration of a trend in a stock's price. What is MACD? The MACD is just the difference between a 26-day and 12-day exponential moving average of closing prices (an exponential moving average or EMA is one where more weight is given to the latest data).

Divergence: The Trade Most Profitable
Because trends are composed of a series of price swings, momentum plays a key role is assessing trend strength. As such, it is important to know when a trend is slowing down. Less momentum does not always lead to a reversal, but it does signal that something is changing, and that the trend may consolidate or reverse. Price momentum refers to the direction and magnitude of price. Comparing price swings helps traders gain insight into price momentum. Here, we'll take a look at how to evaluate price momentum and show you what divergence in momentum can tell you about the direction of a trend.
MACD - Moving Average Convergence/Divergence
What is it? MACD is one of the most commonly used technical indicators for market price and it is relatively simple to apply and understand. It uses 2 sets of moving averages to determine trend characteristics. Momentum is determined by subtracting the longer moving average from the shorter moving average and plotting the results, which may be above or below zero, as a line. The standard model uses a 12 day exponential moving average and a 26 day exponential moving average. A positive MACD indicates that the 12 day moving average is trading above the 26 day moving average and conversely a negative MACD indicates that the 12 day moving average is trading below the 26 day moving average.
MACD (Moving Average Convergence-Divergence) How to Use MACD in Forex Trading
MACD is one of the most reliable indicators. Although we do not believe in using any indicators in our own trading and we always use the candlesticks charting and Bollinger Bands to find the trade setups, still we believe that MACD is a strong indicator specially for novice traders who are used to get in and out of the market too early. MACD is a lagging indicator and its delay makes you be patient, not to rush to enter the market or get out of it too early. Recently we published another article about MACD to show our followers how they can use slower settings of MACD to have a better entry, and hold the positions longer to maximize the profit: How To Use Slower Settings Of MACD Indicator? There are so many professional traders (both stock and forex traders) who rely on this indicator.
